RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Due to their exceptional temperature sensitivity, the mechanical properties of Nickel-titanium and Copper Nickel-titanium wires may be influenced by their storage temperature. This in turn may have clinical implications and may also affect the outcomes. This study analyzed the influence of storage temperatures on the mechanical properties of orthodontic wires in a laboratory setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stainless steel (SS), Nickel-Titanium (NiTi), and three variants of Copper-NiTi (Cu-NiTi 27°C, 35°C and 40°C), 0.017×0.025 inches in size were analysed using a three-point bending test in a pre-heated chamber at 36°C. The orthodontic wires were stored for twenty-four hours before the mechanical testing at four different temperatures (5°, 22°, 36° and 60°C). RESULTS: The obtained results showed that the mechanical forces exerted by 27°C Copper-NiTi exhibit the most stable behaviour after having been stored at different temperatures, whereas 35°C Copper-NiTi showed the highest variability. As to be expected, Stainless steel shows no changes in its bending mechanical properties. CONCLUSION: Furthermore, the results of this investigation reflect the importance of controlling the storage temperature of orthodontic NiTi and Copper-NiTi wires tested in a research environment in order to avoid unexpected bias.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the flexural properties of rectangular nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) orthodontic wires in occlusoapical and faciolingual orientations using a standardized test method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two rectangular Ni-Ti wire groups were tested in occlusoapical (ribbon) orientation: eight conventional Ni-Ti products, five superelastic Ni-Ti products, and nine thermal Ni-Ti products (n = 10 per group). Six products of thermal Ni-Ti wire were tested in faciolingual (edgewise) orientation. A three-point bending test was performed to measure deactivation force at 3.0-, 2.0-, 1.0-, and 0.5-mm deflections of each rectangular wire at 37.0 ± 0.5°C. Analysis of variance and post hoc Student-Newman-Keuls tests were used to compare the mean values of the different groups (α = .05). RESULTS: The ranges of deactivation forces varied greatly with different kinds, sizes, products, and deflections of Ni-Ti wires. One product of conventional and superelastic Ni-Ti wires had steeper force-deflection curves. Four products had similarly shaped flat force-deflection curves, whereas the sixth product had a moderately steep force-deflection curve. Thermal Ni-Ti wires had smaller deactivation forces ranging from 0.773 N (78.8 g) to 2.475 N (252.4 g) between deflections of 1.0 and 0.5 mm, whereas wider ranges of force from 3.371 N (343.7 g) to 9.343 N (952.7 g) were predominantly found among conventional Ni-Ti wires between deflections of 3.0 and 2.0 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should critically select archwires for use in the occlusoapical orientation not only based on Ni-Ti wire type, size (0.022 × 0.016-in or 0.025 × 0.017-in), and product but also with deactivation deflections from 0.5 and 1.0 mm to obtain light forces in the occlusoapical orientation.

RESUMO

Background and aims. This study aimed to investigate release of nickel ion from three types of nickel-titanium-based wires in the as-received state and after immersion in a simulated oral environment. Materials and methods. Forty specimens from each of the single-strand NiTi (Rematitan "Lite"), multi-strand NiTi (SPEED Supercable) and Copper NiTi (Damon Copper NiTi) were selected. Twenty specimens from each type were used in the as-received state and the others were kept in deflected state at 37ºC for 2 months followed by autoclave sterilization. The as-received and recycled wire specimens were immersed in glass bottles containing 1.8 mL of artificial saliva for 28 days and the amount of nickel ion released into the electrolyte was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results. The single-strand NiTi released the highest quantity of nickel ion in the as-received state and the multi-strand NiTi showed the highest ion release after oral simulation. The quantity of nickelion released from Damon Copper NiTi was the lowest in both conditions. Oral simulation followed by sterilization did not have a significant influence on nickel ion release from multi-strand NiTi and Damon Copper NiTi wires, but single-strand NiTi released statistically lower quantities of nickel ion after oral simulation. Conclusion. The multi-strand nature of Supercable did not enhance the potential of corrosion after immersion in the simulated oral environment. In vitro use of nickel-titanium-based archwires followed by sterilization did not significantly increase the amount of nickel ion released from these wires.

Leveling and aligning orthodontic wires must be able to generate light and continuous forces. Thus need to have high springback and flexibility. For this purpose it was suggested a variety of supereslatic and termoactivated Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) wires that may offer a load-deformation curve, in a constant plataform. Copper NiTi wires are presented as exhibiting better thermoactivating properties for optimum-forces system with better dental movement control. The aim of this study was to compare 8 NiTi superelastic and thermoactivated wires of six different brands (GAC, TP, ORMCO, MASEL, MORELLI and UNITEK) to Copper addicted wires (CuNiTi 270C and 350C, ORMCO) to verify if the mechanical properties of Copper NiTi would support it’s clinical use. Stress-strain tests were done in Engeneering Military Institute (IME-Brazil), through test machine (EMIC- DL 10000 model). Scanning electronic microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (JOEL, JSM-5800 LV model) was used to determine chemical composition and superficial topography of the wires. Results showed that, in general, thermoactivated NiTi wires exhibited lower deactivation loads when compared to NiTi superelastics. Among the thermoactivated, the GAC and UNITEK ones are the lighter ones. Among the superelastics, the Copper NiTi 270C (ORMCO) were the lighter ones, statistically similar (ANOVA) to thermoactivated NiTi from UNITEK, for 4% strain. Once Copper NiTi 270C showed deactivated loads 62% lower than Copper NiTi 350C , under 4% strain. As regard to Scanning Electronic Microscopy results for superelastic NiTi wires, better superficial burnishing were found for MASEL and MORELLI ones...
